Both are directional, but they shape light differently
Fresnel and lenticular UST screens are both designed to control which light reaches the viewer. A lenticular surface typically uses fine directional structures that favor the UST projector's upward light. A Fresnel surface uses concentric optical structures that can reject light from more directions, often at the cost of a narrower ideal viewing area.
Lenticular: usually the wider-seating option
Lenticular UST screens are often attractive when sofas extend across the room. The NothingProjector Black Series is marketed with a wide viewing angle and a low 0.6 gain, emphasizing black-level and ambient-light behavior over raw brightness multiplication.
Fresnel: stronger multi-direction rejection, narrower cone
Fresnel designs can reject side light as well as overhead light more aggressively. Community discussions often flag the trade-off: a narrower viewing cone can make side seats less forgiving. Exact behavior varies by model, so do not generalize one Fresnel screen's numbers to another.
Choose based on the room, not the technology name
- Wide sofa or multiple side seats: prioritize verified viewing-angle behavior.
- Strong side-window light: investigate how the specific screen rejects that direction.
- Projector brightness: compare gain and image size together.
- Room layout: confirm whether the screen expects a projector below the image.
