
Gain is a brightness-distribution number
Screen gain compares reflected brightness with a reference surface under defined conditions. A 1.0-gain reference is the baseline; values below 1.0 indicate less light in the measured direction. But with directional screens, a single gain number does not tell the whole story because the screen is intentionally redistributing light.
Why lower gain can still look better in a lit room
If a screen reduces both projected light and unwanted room light, the resulting contrast can look stronger even if peak brightness is lower than on a white surface. That is the reason low-gain UST ALR materials exist.
Viewing angle is the other half of the trade-off
A directional screen can appear brightest over a preferred cone. The wider your seating layout, the more important it is to evaluate side-seat brightness and color. Manufacturer viewing-angle claims are useful context, but your real sofa geometry is more useful.
Applying this to the Black Series
The A4 sample listing states 0.6 gain and a 160-degree viewing angle, while the current full Black Series listing states a 170-degree viewing angle. That difference is a good reminder to verify the exact product variant rather than copying one specification across the entire range.
How to test with a sample
Project the same paused scene and walk from the center seat to the farthest side seat. Do not move the sample with you. You are testing how the surface sends light through the room, not just how it looks straight-on.
