Start with projector type, not screen color
The first filter is whether your projector is ultra-short-throw, short-throw or conventional long-throw. Directional UST screen materials are engineered around light arriving from below at a steep angle. A screen optimized for a different throw path can reject the projector's own light instead of the room light.
Then map the room's unwanted light
Write down where the problem light actually comes from: ceiling fixtures, windows to the side, a bright rear wall, or reflections from a white ceiling. Different optical structures reject different angles. This is why “95% ALR” by itself is not a complete buying decision.
Use gain as a system number
Screen gain interacts with projector brightness, image size and seating angle. Larger pictures spread the projector's light over more area. A darker directional surface can improve perceived black levels in a lit room, but you still need enough projector output to keep highlights convincing.
Choose size after checking geometry
- Confirm the wall can physically hold the screen and frame.
- Check how high the bottom edge must sit above the cabinet.
- Confirm the projector's throw-distance requirement for that exact image size.
- Make sure the cabinet depth places the projector where it needs to be.
- Check eye level and seating distance before jumping from 100 to 120 inches.
Fixed frame, floor rising or drop down?
A fixed frame is mechanically simple and can keep the material uniformly tensioned. A floor-rising screen disappears when not in use and can suit multipurpose rooms. A drop-down screen saves wall space but has its own mounting and tension considerations. The right choice depends as much on the room as the optics.
Sample the surface when the room is the unknown
If you already know the product family but are unsure about darkness, gain or ambient-light behavior, a sample can be more useful than another hour of specification reading. Test it exactly where the finished screen will be.
