
A white screen is simple—and that can be a strength
A matte-white screen aims for broad, relatively even reflection. In a dark, well-controlled room, that can be exactly what you want: wide viewing angles, predictable behavior and no directional structure to align.
Why white screens struggle in reflective rooms
The same broad reflectivity that sends projector light toward the audience also sends room light back toward the audience. Daylight, ceiling fixtures and light bouncing off pale walls can raise the black floor and flatten contrast.
What a UST ALR screen changes
A directional UST ALR surface tries to accept light from the projector's steep approach angle while rejecting more light from other directions. This can protect contrast in a normal living room, but it also creates a more specific viewing cone and demands correct orientation.

Do not treat ALR as a replacement for brightness
Ambient-light rejection helps preserve the image, but it does not create projector lumens. In severe daylight, projector output still matters. An independent 2025 review of a Black Series floor-rising model described very bright conditions as usable but less punchy, with brighter projectors holding up better.
Use a sample for the exact trade-off
If your decision is “white wall/screen versus a darker UST ALR material,” placing a sample over the current projection area is one of the fastest ways to see what happens to blacks, highlights and color under your own light.
