“Daylight viewing” is not one lighting condition
A north-facing window, direct sun on the screen, bright ceiling downlights and pale-wall reflections are different problems. ALR performance depends on where the unwanted light comes from relative to the screen's optical structure.
What UST ALR can help with
Directional UST ALR/CLR screens are designed to send steeply rising projector light toward the viewer while rejecting more light arriving from other angles. That can preserve perceived contrast better than a broadly reflective white screen in a multipurpose room.
What it cannot do
No passive screen creates projector brightness. If sunlight falls directly on the image or the room is extremely bright, the picture can still wash out. A 2025 independent review of a NothingProjector Black Series floor-rising model reported strong control in normal lit-room conditions but noted that very bright conditions still benefited from a more powerful projector.
Three room changes that still matter
- Use blinds or curtains to stop direct sunlight from striking the screen.
- Keep strong light sources out of the screen's acceptance angle where possible.
- Reduce bright wall and ceiling reflections near the image if movie-night contrast matters.
Test the exact time of day
If Saturday-afternoon sport is the reason you want ALR, test the sample on a Saturday afternoon. Nighttime tests cannot answer a daytime use case.
